Aubrey Breen is a cellist, vocalist, and songwriter based in Boston, MA. Her ear for musicality, natural instinct for grooves, and passion for storytelling has made her a sought-after artist in the American folk, Celtic, and Scandinavian scenes around the world.
Aubrey performs with her twin sister in the violin-cello folk duo Aubrey + Olivia. Their EPs, As I Wander and Evelyn, feature traditional Irish tunes, contemporary Swedish melodies, jazz standards, American classics, and original compositions with a sense of nostalgia and hope for the future. Their music has been performed on stages across the U.S. with musicians Mike Block, Joe K. Walsh, Ike Sturm, and The Cody Sisters. Aubrey’s playing has also been featured at the Vero Beach International Music Festival where she’s shared the stage with Natalie Haas, Hanneke Cassel, and Casey Driessen. .
Leaning into her passion for singing and composition, Aubrey sang with the Notre Dame Folk Choir for four years. With the choir, she arranged string parts and recorded The Passion in Jerusalem, arranged and performed Joe Troop’s “Rearrange My Heart,” and coordinated and played cello in the choir’s Spring 2023 East Coast tour, which included The Town Hall (NYC), Strathmore (Bethesda, MD), and The Byham Theater (Pittsburgh, PA).
Aubrey lived in Galway, Ireland, for a year, where she brought her cello to pub sessions across the island. She worked and conducted research in the Irish Traditional Music Archive in Dublin, and performed at the Royal Irish Academy of Music with fiddler Liam O’Connor, uilleann piper Seán Potts, Matt Malloy (The Chieftains), Kevin Conneff (The Chieftains), Paul Dooley, and Edwina Guckian. Upon returning to the U.S., she performed with The High Kings at the Inauguration of Notre Dame’s 18th President. In March 2025, she organized and presented a series of workshops, concerts, and lectures titled, “Sharing the Living Tradition: Irish Traditional Music, Identity, and Culture,” for which she brought five University of Galway musicians to Chicago and South Bend, Indiana.
Aubrey’s musical interests are primarily focused in folk traditions. Beyond Irish music, she loves the depth and unique harmonies found in Scandinavian music. She recorded cello on Nyckelharpa player Emelie Waldken’s original album “Genom Natten,” and has attended multiple Scandinavian cultural festivals, including Ransäterstämman and the Danish music week, RØD.
Each summer, Aubrey brings her music educational expertise to the Mike Block String Camp in Vero Beach, Florida, where she serves as assistant faculty. Aubrey holds a bachelor's degree in music from the University of Notre Dame.
